Ammonification
The third step in the Nitrogen cycle is ammonification. In this step fungal and bacterial decomposers use nitrogen-containing wastes and dead bodies as a food source and then excrete ammonium. This excess ammonium is then converted into nitrogen in the next step of the Nitrogen cycle, Nitrification.
